The best VPN applications for free are ones that don’t try to oblige you to upgrade by imposing limits and restrictions. For instance, Proton VPN Free tops my list because it provides a great mix of features as well as power and quality without limiting data usage or including ads. Its dedicated geoblocking team makes it one of the few alternatives that are free to consistently unblock Netflix and BBC iPlayer. It also keeps the core privacy features like WireGuard and content blocking, unlike other free services.
TunnelBear is a different top free VPN application. It offers user-friendly applications and offers a fast speed while allowing 2GB of data per month. Its data collection policy, however it is alarming. It collects location codes, browsing actions, and other details which could reveal your online surveillance. Psiphon is another option that is popular however, it also logs more troubling information, including timestamped browsing activity as well as device information, and shares user data with commercial partners.
CyberGhost is another excellent alternative that is free. It offers a basic application and navigation. Its “Best server location” feature automatically chooses the most reliable connection for your location, or you can expand it to select a specific country. Its security is impressive as well, with full leak protection for RAM-only servers as well as perfect forward secrecy. It also comes with a log-free audited security policy and a robust tracker blocker. The only downside is that it only supports only one device at a given time.
